(Sam) Dennis, 92, Lake Park, formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., died on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Lakehaven Nursing Home in Valdosta. Born on Aug. 15, 1916, in Berrien County, he was the son of the late George Roe and Bessie Guthrie Dennis. Mr. Dennis was retired from Zurich-American Insurance Company as a commissioned Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector. He was on the National Board of Boilermakers and while in Jacksonville, he actively participated in the restoration and preservation of the Springfield area in the mid 1980’s. Mr. Dennis was a member of Lake Park Christian Church and a former member of Main Street Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Clara Moody Dennis of Lake Park; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris Lewis of Valdosta, Mildred and Fred Maxwell of Jacksonville, Dorothy and Jimmy Rogers, Roberta Saunders, all of Lake Park, Molly and Randall Sauls of Valdosta, Kathy Booth of Lake Park; brothers and sister-in-law, Eston and Burnell Dennis of Nashville, and Gene Dennis of Lake Park; sisters-in-law, Narna Dennis, Bonnie Dennis and Linda Dennis, all of Lake Park, and Ann Shepherd of Burlington, N.C.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tommy and Rachael Moody of Burlington, N.C.; special uncle, William Guthrie of Nashville. Mr. Dennis is also survived by four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence E. (Larry) Dennis; brothers, Edwin, George, Charles and Richard Dennis; sister, Ruth Godwin; and second mother, Remmie Terrell Dennis. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, in the chapel of McLane Lakewood Funeral Home in Lake Park with Min. Larry J. Harden officiating. Burial will follow in Corinth Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Lake Park. McLane Lakewood Funeral Home of Lake Park was in charge of arrangements.
