Gary Passes At 83; Burial Monday Judge J.H. Gary, 83, one of Nashville’s oldest and best known citizens, died at Askew Memorial Hospital at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, following an illness of about two weeks. He had been in failing health for the past year and had undergone several operations. He had been up and about his business however, until his confinement to the hospital. Born in Barbour County, Ala., March 25, 1871, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gary, deceased, he attended public schools there and later attended Mercer University at Macon, and came to Berrien County at the age of 21. He studied law in the offices of the late Judge Henry Peeples of Nashville and was admitted to the bar. Among offices of prominence held during his lifetime was Superintendent of Nashville City Schools, County School Superintendent for eight years, Solicitor of City Court 16 years and Justice of the Peace for the last several years of his life. He also engaged in the practice of law here for many years. He was a member of the Nashville Baptist Church for 50 years, a mason and shriner. Twice married, his first wife was Miss Mattie Peeples, daughter of Judge Henry Peeples, to which union three sons and three daughters were born. His second wife was Mrs. Lula Pace, who survives. Other survivors are: Two sons, E.J. and H.P. Gary, Louisville, Ky.; three daughters, Mrs. R.C. Griner, Lenox, Mrs. W.R. Jones, Nashville and Mrs. A.T. Fuller, Ocilla; one stepson, Emmett Pace; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Allie Taylor, both of Nashville; 14 grand children and five great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Ruby Hanna, Caddo Gap, Ark., also survives. Funeral services were held from the Nashville Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Monday, with Rev. O.E. Graves, Rev. Tom Watson and Rev. T.A. Whiting officiating. A group of singers including Herbert Griffin, Owen Griffin, Edgar Griffin and Mrs. Rachel Cox sang “Abide With Me.” W.F. Parrish sang a solo, “Sunrise Tomorrow.” Active pall bearers were: Emmett Williams, Dr. Roy E. Davis, Gary Moore, Robert Gaskins, A.W. Gaskins, Jr. and Robert Drake. Graveside rites were conducted by Duncan Masonic Lodge. Burial was in Nashville Cemetery. Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
