He was born Sept. 28, 1937, in Berrien County, to the late Felton Gaskins and t the late Eloise Nix. He was a retired warranty clerk with Chaparral Boats and s spent nine years as a merchant marine. He was of Baptist faith. He is survived by his son, Huey Joseph "Jody" Gaskins of Nashville; two daughters, Sylvia Joye Lemmerman of Nashville and Connie Lynn Connell of Lakeland; the mother of his children, Faye Gaskins; a sister, Carolyn Averett of Sun City, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in in death by a sister, Faye Rodgers . Memorials are requested to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Boulevard, S Suite 1010, Rockville, Md., 20852. The family has honored his request for cremation. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 1, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Junior Swain officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Charles Connell sang "Old Time Preacher Man" and "Lily of the Valley." Kenny Young sang "I Firmly Promise You."
