Gaskins, 47, of Route Three, Nashville, succumbed to a four months illness on Monday, October 1, at Pineview General Hospital in Valdosta. In the first week of July, at the onset of Mr. Gaskins’ illness and during the peak season for farm week, his neighbors in the Riverside Community mustered their forces and, in concerted effort, completed the gathering of his tobacco crop. It was at this time that he underwent major surgery at Talmadge Memorial Hospital in Augusta, and the genuine concern of his community members is ample testimony of the esteem in which he was held. Mr. Gaskins was born in this county on July 2, 1915, the son of the late Willie W. and Elizabeth Wilkerson Gaskins. He was married to Miss Virginia Cowart in August of 1935. He practiced farming all of his adult life, was a devout member of the Riverside Baptist Church, devoted to his family and a conscientious worker for his community. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 3, from the church of his membership, with the Reverend James Hendley, Julian Rowan and Felton Gaskins officiating. A quartet composed of Roy F. Davis, Herbert Griffin, Owen Griffin, and Mrs. Carl Wilkerson, accompanied by Mrs. Julian Rowan, pianist, sang “Precious Memories”, “There’s a Mansion Now Waiting for Me,” “What A Friend We Have in Jesus”, and “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me.” Mr. Gaskins was laid to rest in the Riverside churchyard cemetery. Active pallbearers were Bremen Hendley, H.E. Brown, Emden McCranie, Elton Vickers, Harvey Griner, and J.M. Brogdon. The accompanying honorary escort was formed by Batie Gaskins, Julian Vickers, Howard Hodges, Otis Cater, Newt Tyson, Roberson Gaskins, Buddy Corbitt, Roy Gaskins, Preston Gaskins, Carson Faulkner, Claude Faulkner, Leon Brogdon, Ernest Garrett, Lee Crosby, W.K. Sikes, Wilbur Corbitt, Bernie Floyd, Elton Metts, and C.C. Henderson. Surviving beside the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Juanita Maupin and Miss Helen Gaskins, and one brother, Felton Gaskins, all of Nashville. He leaves one grandchild. All arrangements were by Lovein Funeral home.
