G. "Bunkum" Gibbs went home to be with Jesus Thursday evening, Dec. 24, 2009 after a day of celebration with his family and close friends at his residence in Enigma. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors with Dr. Danny Ray officiating. Burial will follow at Tift Memorial Gardens. Mr. Gibbs' grandsons, George Gibbs, Michael Gibbs, Rocky Gibbs, Bruce Gibbs, Derrick Gibbs and Chance Fussell, will serve as pallbearers. Born March 30, 1922 in Berrien County to George Gibbs and Lula Garren Gibbs, both deceased, Mr. Gibbs was also preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Melissa Ann Gibbs; his son, Franklin Harrell who was killed in Vietnam; and his grandson, Sgt. Mathew Gibbs, who was killed in Iraq. Mr. Gibbs served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, retired from Short and Paulk Lumber Co in Tifton and attended Victory Tabernacle Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Florence Harrell Gibbs; a daughter, Agnes Gibbs of Enigma; three sons and daughters-in-law, Horace G. and Janice Gibbs of Valdosta, Nelson H. and Becky Gibbs of Enigma and Paul Vincent and Kathleen Gibbs of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandchildren, Dottie Morrison, George Gibbs, Michael Gibbs, Rocky Gibbs, Bruce Gibbs, Derrick Gibbs, Melissa Gibbs, Felicia Carr and Sarah Fussell; plus 26 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Gerether Hudson of Macon. The Gibbs family wishes to thank the entire staff of Hospice of Tift Area for their loving kindness and care they were given during Mr. Gibbs' lengthy illness.
