He was born the born the last of seven children to Osie and Eldie Whitley Giddens on June 1, 1935, in Irwin County, Ocilla, Ga. He went through the Irwin County School System and graduated in 1955. During his time in high school, having been brought up in a musical family, he became part of an FFA string band playing bass fiddle. This experience was something that would last for many years to come. He had a special love for all kinds of music and enjoyed making music with his two brothers and others for many years. He served his country at home, being a member of the National Guard for nine years. On Oct. 25, 1957, he married Shirley Moore and eight years later they became parents of their first child, Kevin Scott. Six years later, on the day Kevin started to school, there was another family member born, a daughter, Karla. In 1966, he began working with the U.S. Postal Service. This was a job he very much loved that would last 35 years. He retired in October of 2000 after serving for 24 years as the rural carrier on Route 3. He was awarded the Million Mile Safe Driving Award from the U.S. Postal Service for delivering mail for 30 years without a preventable accident. Less than five percent of postal carriers ever achieve this award. In September 1977 he joined the Nashville First Baptist Church, where for many years he was a member of the Adult Choir and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Moore Giddens of Nashville; a daughter, Karla (Matt) Stanaland of Valdosta; a son, Kevin (Donna) Giddens of Nashville; a sister, Louise Harper of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren, Dudley Stanaland, Laura Stanaland, Elizabeth Giddens and Scott Giddens; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 26, 2009, at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Stanley Luke, Mr. Jackson Moore and Mr. Don Rayfield officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Robert Griffin, Adam Mitchell, Mark David, Michael Davis, Ronnie Phillips, Jimmy Harper. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Visitation is Saturday from 7-9 p.m. - Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
