Griner, 81, of Nashville died Sept. 10, 2003 at Berrien County Hospital. Born Aug. 3, 1922 in Berrien Co. to the late James Caulie and Janie Griffin Griner, he was a former deputy sheriff for Berrien County. He was the county's first director of the Civil Defense, which is now known as the Emergency Management Agency. He retired from the City of Nashville as director of work control and was the first full time fireman hired by the city. He was a charter member and deacon emeritus of Flat Creek Missionary Baptist Church; an Army veteran of WWII with service in the Pacific Theater; a member of the VFW and American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Hancock Griner of Nashville; two daughters, Jean Gunther of North Augusta, SC and Sue Sistrunk of Valdosta; one son, Jamie Griner of Tifton; one sister, Corene Kent of Nashville; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at Flat Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs.. Mickey Lindsey, Gary James and Mark Swain officiating. The church choir sang "Winging My Way Back Home," "Farther Along," and "Amazing Grace." Interment was in Flat Creek Cemetery. Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
