Born July 11, 1936 in Nashville to the late Nelle Veatch and Pompey James Griner Sr., he was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 2000. Prior to moving to Beaufort, he was a member of Nashville United Methodist Church for 35 years. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia from the College of Pharmacy in 1958. After graduation he worked in manufacturing pharmacy in Greenville, SC, as assistant director of Table Rock Laboratories. In 1960 he began his career in retail pharmacy in Waycross. In 1965 in bought Union Pharmacy in Nashville. Later he owned and operated two drug stores in Nashville, working as the pharmacist at Town and Country Pharmacy. He served on the Georgia Pharmaceutical Association Board of Directors for ten years and as district president for eight years. He also served on the University of Georgia Alumni Advisory Council. He was a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association and the National Association of Retail Druggists. In Nashville he served as chairman of the Housing Authority, served on the City Council, two years as mayor pro-tem, Berrien County Industrial Authority, Berrien County Chamber of Commerce serving as president for eight years. He was a charter member and officer of the Berrien County Jaycees, and served on the Berrien County Advisory Committee for the Aged. As a member of Nashville United Methodist Church, he served on the administrative board, staff-parrish committee, also serving as chairman, served as an usher, and as finance chairman for the church. He was very involved in his community and received the Chamber Member of the Year Award in 1976. The Georgia Pharmaceutical Association awarded him the Outstanding District President's Award in 1977. In 1979 he was awarded the Bowl of Hygeia, the highest award for outstanding service to his community and profession. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Bostick Griner of Beaufort; one daughter, Mary Jo Griner of Manhattan, NY; a son, Stewart James Griner of Cheyenne, WY; a sister, Sherry Griner Jacoberger; five grandchildren, Jacqui Palumbo of Syracuse University, NY; Sam, Sarah, Ben and Julia Griner of Cheyenne; three nieces and two nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Griner. A graveside service was held September 27 at 11:30 a.m. at Westvew Cemetery in Nashville with the Revs. Dwight Bishop and Billy Southerland officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Hanson Carter, Homer Whelchel, Emmitt Lewis, Guy Tittle, Wayne Stallings, Andy Morrison, Ronald McCranie, Jim Garrett, Jack Knight, Bill Perry, Virgil Hickox, Mitchell Moore.
