Guthrie Died in Atlanta Early Yesterday All of Berrien County was shocked early yesterday morning to learn of the death of A.J. Guthrie in the Veterans hospital in Atlanta. Mr. Guthrie passed away at about 1 o’clock Wednesday morning. He had been ill the past two months and was carried to the Veterans hospital two weeks ago, and on last Friday underwent an operation from which he failed to recover. He had previously spent a week in the Veterans hospital in Lake City, Fla. Mr. Guthrie was born and reared in Berrien County and lived all of his life here. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. Guthrie and was 51 years of age. Besides farming he had served a number of terms on the County Board of Commissioners, and on January 1, next, would have finished the present term. He did not offer for re-election in the February county primary. He was a veteran of the World War. Mr. Guthrie was a likeable man, highly regarded and esteemed by all people who knew him, and many friends in all parts of the state will be sorry to learn of his death. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Guthrie church in eastern Berrien County, conducted by Rev. Oscar Walker, pastor of the Bethel Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, in charge of the Giddens Funeral Home of Nashville. The body arrived at Willacoochee this morning at 3 o’clock and was carried to his home fourteen miles east of Nashville. Surviving besides his widow are five children, Mrs. J. Powell of Augusta, Mrs. Julius Paulk of Willacoochee, and Evelyn and Doris Guthrie and A.J. Guthrie Jr. Two brothers and two sisters also survive, M.D. Guthrie of Nashville, Sam Guthrie of Douglas, Mrs. Jess Harrell and Mrs. Bud Jones of Berrien County.
