Born April 21, 1920, in Burke County to the late Tate and Mary Williams Butler, she was a direct descendant of two American Revolutionary War Soldiers, Neil Culbreth and Charles Butler, both of Sampson County, NC. She was proud of being a descendant of the Galbraith Clan of Scotland. She attended Georgia College for Women in Milledgeville for two years before coming to Nashville in September, 1938 as a second grade teacher at Nashville Elementary School. She met and married Yates W. Hancock. During WWII, Yates served in the U.S. Navy aboard LST 293 and participated in the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. White her husband was in the Navy, she decided to do her part in the war effort so she moved to Warner Robins and worked at Robins Air Base in one of the airplane hangars issuing parts needed to repair damaged aircraft to get them back into service. Many weeks were spent working seven days. After the war ended, she and Yates returned to Berrien County. Yates taught on- farm agricultural classes to returning farm veterans and she taught fourth grade. She attended Valdosta State College and earned a B.S. degree in elementary education. She remained on the faculty at Nashville Elementary until she retired on July 1, 1977. She was a life member of Georgia Retired Teachers and a member of the Nashville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Yates W. Hancock, who drowned in a boating accident on the Ocmulgee River on July 8, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her seven sisters, Eva Reeves, Lenna Sutton Tew, Ruth Kirkland, Ethelyn Bargeron, Elva Nobles, Margaret B. Butler, and Doris Horton, two nieces and five nephews. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Wynn and Jean Hancock; grandson, Lawrence Hancock of Nashville; two step-granddaughters, Rhonda Carroll Smith of Nashville and Melanie Carroll of Atlanta, three step-great-grandchildren, one step-great-great-grandchild, three nieces, two nephews. Funeral services were held November 21 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with Dr. Russ Elkins and Dr. Danny Ray officiating. Music on CD included “In the Garden” and “Abide with Me.” Interment was in Westview Cemetery. Pallbearers were Butch Houston, Don Williams, Johnny Lovein, Randy Hancock, Timmy Hughes, Hank Decker, Kenny Hughes. Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
