Mr. Harper was born on October 12, 1930, in Alapaha to the late Thomas and Laura Maude Childs Harper. "Walt: proudly served in three different branches of the military, the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. During his military service, he received many medals and decorations including but not limited to the Parachute/Glider Badge, SAEMR, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force longevity Service Medal, and Outstanding Unit Award. He completed several military training courses that included the Light Weapons Inf. leader, Airborne, Aerology, NAVPERS, Officer Candidate School, Supervisor for Tropic Survival and Artic Survival. The units he was attached to were the 325th Air, 1975th AACS Squadron (MATS), 17 TCS (AAC), 17 TAC A1 ft Sq. (AAC) and 1st APRON (TAC). Walt also had the privilege of flying with the Blue Angels and to parachute with the Golden Knights on several occasions. After he retired from the Air Force in 1971, he continued his line of work as aan Air Traffic Controller with the FAA. He retired from the FAA in 1993. Mr. Harper was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Miller Harper, sisters, Woodie Harper Harsey, Wilma Harper Moore; brothers, Henry, Wiley and Lewis Harper. Mr. Harper is survived by his son, William Wayne Harper; daughter, Wanda Harper Wagner and her spouse, Phillip Pat Wagner; three grandchildren, Amanda Nathan and Averi; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Sayla; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held on Sunday, May 10 at Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park in Tallahassee, FL.
