Born July 16, 1948 in Nashville to Elmon Jo Harris of Nashville and the late Carlton Harris, he was a member and deacon of Zion Wall Freewill Baptist Church in Nashville. He was a Vietnam veteran, U.S. Army Reserve (Retired), Delphi (Retired), 30 years. He was a member of First Fifty Black Men, American Legion Jr. Vice President, Post 115, VFW Post 5978, and former president of the local NAACP. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Celeste Harris, brother, Robert Wilcox, paternal grandmother, Virginia Middlebrooks. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Janice Harris of Nashville; mother-in-law, Bertha Black of Miami, FL; three children, Zarayna Monita Harris of Nashville, Chernard Harris of Kleen, Texas, and Tally (Twander) Hartman of Leesburg; two grandson, Quazmon Harris of Nashville and Georgia and Tally Harmon, Jr. of Leesburg; brother, Carlton (Mary Jean) Harris of Queens, NY; four sisters, Maxine (J.C.) Carter, of Nashville, Freddie (Norman) Pottinger of Charleston, S.C., Carolyn Stokes of Atlanta, Jewell (Herbert) Boone of Nashville; a special sister, Sarah McCloud of Nashville; four sisters-in-law, Margo Black of Miami, FL, Debra Parks of Lakeland, Latrelle (Lucky) of Alapaha and Myrtice Wilcox of Adel; five brothers-in-law, Rev. Marvin (Earnestine) Smith, Sr, of Alapaha, Michael (Stephanie) Graham of Springfield, VA, Bruce Black of Miami, Ricky Smith of Ray City, Larry (Dale) Smith of Nashville; a special cousin, Ronald Birchett; many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral services were held June 29 at 1 p.m. at New Emanuel Baptist Church in Nashville with the Revs. Ralph White, Jr., pastor and Bruce Jenkins officiating. Musical selections were given by the St. James Traveling Choir and solos by Dorothy Poole and Rev. Wallace Jordon, III. Interment was in Eastview Cemetery in Nashville. Active pallbearers were former members of the U.S. Army Reserve of 377th Quarter Master Petroleum Co. in Tifton. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Burton, Carlton Lewis, Samuel Lucas, Bobby Everett, John Lewis, Larry Mathis. Black and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
