She was born December 14, 1925, in Winder to the late Joe Osborne and Virginia Middlebrooks. She attended Dasher High School in Valdosta as a member of the Class of 1945. She was employed with the Nashville Alternative Service Center for 31 years and was a member of Zion Wall Freewill Baptist Church for over 60 years, serving as secretary for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Berrien County Health Department Collaborative Board, Eastern Star, the Charmette Club, and the Pink Lady Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Harris, Sr.; sons, Carlton Harris, Jr. and Donald Harris; stepson, Robert Wilcox; granddaughter, Celeste Harris; sister, Johnnie Mae Birchett; aunts, Monken Crawford, Odessa Hamilton and Gertrude Williams; three close cousins, Charles Hamilton, I.W. Hamilton, and Joe Poole. Mrs. Elmon Joe was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend. She leaves to mourn her passing four devoted daughters, Maxine (J.C.) Carter of Nashville, Freddie Carol (Norman) Pottinger of Charleston, SC, Carolyn Stokes of College Park and Jewell (Herbert) Boone of Nashville; one devoted nephew, Ronald Birchett of Nashville; three daughters-in-law, Mary Jean Harris of Jamaica, NY, Janice Harris of Nashville and Myrtice Wilcox of Adel; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and other relatives. Homegoing services for Mrs. Harris were held on Saturday, May 16 at 1 p.m. at New Emanuel Baptist Church in Nashville with Rev. Ralph White, Jr., pastor, and Rev. Bruce Jenkins, officiating. Flowers attendants were Zion Wall Freewill Baptist Church members and community friends. Ushers were provided by various churches. A repast was held at the Berrien County Extension Building in Nashville. Active pallbearers were grandsons, Eric Harris, J.J. Stokes, Chernard Harris, Jernard Stokes, Tally Hartman, Phillip Harris, Scott Harris. Honorary pallbearers were Bro. Bobby Everett, Bro. John Lewis, Bro. Earl miles, Bro. Larry Burton, Bro. Hayward Collier, Bro. Theodore Riley. Interment was in Eastview Cemetery in Nashville. Black and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
