He was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Laurens County to the late Hayden and Addie Mae G Garrett Herndon. He was a retired civil service firefighter at Moody AFB and a also retired with the Nashville Fire Department, member of Nashville First B Baptist Church, Army veteran of WWII, Mason in Duncan Lodge 234 F and AM and a S Shriner in Hasan Temple. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lillian Perry Herndon of Nashville; daughter, Mary Jon (Lou) Buckner, LaVista, Neb.; daughter-in-law, Paula Railey, Adel; two granddaughters, Amanda Buckner, Rachel Buckner; two sisters, Mary Anderson, Atlanta, Inez Gordon, Ludowici. He was preceded in death by a son, James W. "Chuck" Herndon Jr., who died in 1 1971. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. David Akins officiating. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. today. Pallbearers included Dane Perkins, Don Williams, David Taylor, Bill Turner, Newt Hughes, Tommy Davis, Alton Exum, Frank Haile, jim Karras, Jackie Railey.
