A funeral service was held in Indiana on December 19 at 7 p.m. at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center. On December 22 a funeral service was held at 11 a.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Berrien County with the Rev. Gary James officiating. Interment was in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers. Born March 22, 1942 in Lenox to Ruby Inez Griner Johnson of Tifton and the late William Joseph Johnson, he graduated from Berrien High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston. He was awarded both a Master's Degree and PhD in electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MLT and later earned his MBA from Harvard University. He was a Distinguished Fellow of Bell Laboratories/Lucent Technologies where he worked for 26 years, retiring as Vice President of Research and Development in Software Switching Systems. He was instrumental in the development of digital telecommunications and held several patents on the basic software design of modern communications switching systems. He volunteered with the Friends of the Carmel Clay Public Library and was politically active as an election judge in Hamilton County. He loved to play chess and other games, enjoyed bird watching and nature, and was an avid reader. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of 23 years, Nancy Burzinski Johnson; two daughters, Sarah and Rachel; one son, David; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Connie Johnson and Stan and Micheale Johnson all of Tifton; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Jo Beth and Doug Peacock of Maitland, FL, Sue and Willard Lance of Washington, GA and Jan and Danny Tyson of Tifton; numerous nieces and nephews.
