Born October 15, 1935 in Irwin County to the late John Thomas and Lizzie Giddens Johnson, he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served for several years at both ward and branch level clerk and was currently serving as the branch administrator. He retired from the U.S. Air Force with 23 years of service and immediately went to work with the U.S. State Department Foreign Service programs for several years and retired, returning to Nashville in 1984 where he worked for and retired from the administrative department of Chaparral Boats. Included among the many medals he was awarded are the Meritorious Service Medal awarded three times, Air Force Commendation Medal awarded three times, Cold War Medal, Meritorious Service Medal State of Mississippi, and Meritorious Service Medal Republic of China. He was a longtime member of China Post I Soldiers of Fortune Shanghai China, operating in exile. He was also a member of the Air Force Association. Survivors include his wife, Ava Faulkner Johnson of Nashville; daughter, Mitzi Yarbrough and son-in-law, Neil Yarbrough of Eufaula, AL; son, Rick Johnson and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Johnson of Nashville; five grandchildren, Miles and Emma Yarbrough of Eufaula, Whitney, Spencer and Diana Johnson of Nashville; two sisters, Sue Cook of High Springs, FL and Gerry Bailey of Douglas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Johnson and a sister, Mae Eunice Johnson. Funeral services were held October 27 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with Tommy Spikes, Bishop Bruce Leet and S.G. Solomon, Jr. officiating. Music was performed by a selected Mormon choir with Cheryl Spikes as accompanist. Songs included "God Be With You Till We Meet Again," "I Need You Every Hour," "Abide With Me Tis Eventide." Interment with full military honors was held in Nashville Memorial Gardens. Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
