Lovett, former judge of the city court of Nashville, and prominent attorney of Tampa, Fla., died today at noon in Nashville, where he was attending court. Judge Lovett was busy in the court room until noon, when he went to the hotel, to the room of Col. Dickerson, where he was suddenly stricken, and died. Death was attributed to apoplexy. Judge Lovett was 57 years of age. Until five years ago he made his home in Nashville. He then moved to Tampa, where he built up a large law practice. He passed through Valdosta on Saturday with his family, and spent some hours with his sister, Mrs. J.L. Giddens. At that time, he appeared to be in the best of health. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Judge Lovett is survived, besides his wife, by a daughter, Miss Marion, and a son, Mr. Donald Lovett. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Giddens, and two brothers, Mr. Gene Lovett of Adel, and Mr. June Lovett of Valdosta. Judge Lovett was a well known figure in the bar of South Georgia, before moving to Tampa, and was very popular with all the attorneys and court attaches, as well as with the public at large. ***** The Valdosta Daily Times, page 5, May 30, 1929 Funeral Is Held for Judge Lovett Tampa Attorney, Who Died at Nashville, Former Home, Is Laid to Rest MANY AT THE SERVICES Funeral services were held for Judge J.D. Lovett at Nashville Wednesday morning at the Baptist Church at ten o’clock. The services were conducted by Rev. J.B. Luke, a lifelong friend of the deceased, assisted by Rev. A.H. Giddens, pastor of Nashville Baptist Church and concluding remarks were made by Hon. W.G. Avera, who paid a beautiful tribute to the life of Judge Lovett. The funeral was largely attended and the floral offerings were many and beautiful. Judge Lovett is survived by his wife and two children, Miss Marion Lovett and Donald Lovett of Tampa, Fla., where the family had resided for the past five years. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. J.L. Giddens of Valdosta, Mrs. W.B. Sellers of Samson, Ala., Mrs. G.W. Boring of Fernandina, Fla., Mrs. H.L. Gary of Poulan, Ga., E.J. Lovett of Valdosta and J.E. Lovett of Sparks. The deceased was fifty-five years of age and was born and reared at Sparks, but had been a resident of Nashville for many years, serving Berrien County as clerk of superior court for a term of years, was ordinary of the county for one or two terms, judge of city court of Nashville, and was the first solicitor general of the Alapaha circuit, when it was created a few years ago. He had also served the city of Nashville as mayor and in other capacities as a public officer. He was a man of magnetic personality and numbered his friends by his acquaintances.
