Marvin Mathis, 81, of Nashville, passed away Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Berrien Nursing Center. He was born May 17, 1916 in Berrien Co. to William Mathis and the former Pearl Nesmith. He owned Mathis Grocery and Market for many years and retired as a buyer for Rio Stores in Albany. He was a Holiness Baptist "country preacher: for 47 years and was a member of the Vickers Holiness Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Nell Able Mathis of Nashville; three sons, Dawson Mathis of Washington, DC, Ronnie Mathis of Fairfax, VA., and Ricky Mathis of Pembroke, NC; two sisters, Lillian Griffin of Nashville and Zelma Mathis of Jacksonville, FL; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Vickers Holiness Baptist Church. The Rev. Martin Wilson will officiate. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m. Lovein Funeral Home, Nashville is serving the Mathis family.
