Born to Lucille Tatum Mathis of Nashville and the late Perry Mathis, he was a farmer in Berrien County and a member of First Baptist Church of Ray City. He served with the U.S. Army and was a member of the VFW and DAV. Survivors, in addition to this mother, include his wife, Marvine Mathis of Nashville; four sons, Arthur Randall Mathis, Jr. of Tifton, James Scott Mathis, Chris Mathis, Austin Allen Mathis, all of Nashville; five brothers, Donald Mathis, Robert Mathis, Billy Mathis, all of Nashville, Jerry Mathis and Joe Mathis, both of Baker, FL; four sisters, Evelyn Kent and Bonnie Baker, both of Nashville, Faye Morris of Altha, FL, Susie Holloway of Sparks; eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 12 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Ray City with Rev. Clarence Luke officiating. Musical selections included "I Can't Even Walk," "I Want Us To Be Together in Heaven," and "Go Rest High on That Mountain." Interment was in Nashville Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were Donnie Mathis, Ricky Kent, Bryan Mathis, Derrin Luke, Glynn Luke, Wayne Warren. Honorary pallbearers were James Southerland, Greg Harrell, Wayne Peters, Darrell Hill, Mike Luke, Clinton Ray, Billy Cartwright. Music Funeral Services of Lakeland was in charge of arrangements.
