He was born July 31, 1946, in Berrien County to the late Roy Mathis and the late Rebecca Flanders. He was a retired mechanic and for several years taught in the vocational department at Berrien High School. He was a member of Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Greg Exum of Nashville; a son and daughter-in-law; Iran and Jessica Mathis of Nashville; two sisters, Dorothy Rowland of Valdosta and Eloise Kelly of Brunswick; two brothers, Donald Mathis of Nashville and Sonny Mathis of Enigma; and one granddaughter; Hannah Exum. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kelsey Exum. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Swain and the Rev. Mickey Lindsey officiating. Interment is in Poplar Springs Cemetery. Selected music was provided by Carolyn Jean Kirkland. Pallbearers were Glen Rowland, Kyle Mathis, Ronald Mathis, Mike Mathis, Marty Mathis, Steven Mathis, Ryan Kelly. Visitation is today after 2 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m. at Lovein Funeral Home, Nashville. Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
