Mr. and Mrs. Mathis reside near Poplar Springs. The mother was in the kitchen preparing dinner, and the little girl was being cared for by its larger sister. The baby was sitting on a bench near a table where the hot soup was resting. The baby accidently hit the pan and the hot fluid dashed on its body. The other child was also burned but not seriously. A physician was called immediately and treatment administered, with the hopes that the little one would recover. However, Friday morning its condition was serious and death resulted that afternoon. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at the Poplar Springs Church before a large gathering of friends and relatives. Rev. Abner Sirmans conducted the services. The floral offerings were said to have been very many and pretty. Those surviving are the parents, two sisters and five brothers.
