M’Millan Died at Alapaha Mr. M.J. McMillan, one of the older and most substantial citizens of Alapaha, died Saturday night after a short illness of acute Bright’s disease. Mr. McMillan was well-known throughout this section and he had many friends who are grieved at his death. He had quite a number of friends in and around Adel who will read of his death with regret. He was a good citizen and will be missed. We copy the following account of his death from the Tifton Gazette: Mr. M.J. McMillan, one of the most prominent and best loved citizens of Alapaha, died Saturday night at 8:10 o’clock after a short illness caused by an attack of acute Bright’s disease. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock by Rev. L.E. Pierce, of Pelham. Rev. Gray, of Ocilla, and Rev. J.D. Snyder, pastor of the Alapaha church. The pallbearers were: Messrs. J.H. Henderson, E.D. Gaskins, F.T. Tiller, J.H. Collier, and L.F. Register. Music was rendered by the Ocilla Methodist choir. Interment was at the Fletcher Cemetery 2 1-2 miles from Alapaha, just a few hundred yards from where he was born. Mr. McMillan was a brother of the late James S. McMillan who died here Friday night after being struck by a train that afternoon. He was unconscious when the burial of his brother took place and never roused, when the end came Saturday night. Alapaha has lost one of its best men and one whom everybody loved and respected. He was the staunchest member of the Methodist church and a friend to everybody, especially the poor. He was 73 years of age and all of these were spent in and near Alapaha. He was the senior partner of the store of M.J. McMillan and Son and had been successful in a financial way. He will be greatly missed by the people of this town and surrounding community. Mr. McMillan is survived by his wife, who was Miss Julia Griffin, and the following children: Mrs. Albert Jordan, of Hartsville, S.C.; Mrs. S.L. McElroy, of Ocilla; Mrs. J.E. Maddox and Mr. C.E. McMillan, of Alapaha. He is also survived by two brothers, Messrs. John and Jake McMillan, and four sisters: Miss Mary McMillan and Mrs. Sarah Fletcher, of Alapaha; Mrs. Betsy Fletcher, of Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Katie Fletcher, of near Tifton. – Adel News.
