She was born on Oct. 5, 1943, in Newport Co., R.I. to the late Charles William Tate and Annie Lee Hardy. She attended grammar school in Miami, Fla. and Northside High School in Atlanta. Her college years were at Emory-At-Oxford in Covington (1961-63) and Emory University in Atlanta (1963-65), where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and majored in elementary education. On July 31, 1965, she married William Stuart “"Bill"” Perry of Nashville in Miami, Fla. Her teaching career began in the fall of 1965 at the Walter P. Jones Elementary School in Macon. While she and Bill lived in Macon for three years, she served as president of the Mercer University Law Student’s Wives Association. Connie and Bill moved to Nashville in June 1968, where she taught in the Berrien County public school system for several years. Connie was active in civic affairs and served on numerous state and local governmental boards, including the Board of Human Resources for the State of Georgia, The Board of Community Affairs, the Board of Trustees for Emory-At- Oxford College, The Board of Trustees for the United Methodist Children’s Home and the Board of Trustees for the Warm Springs Foundation. Connie was elected as the second female council person for the City of Nashville in 2000 and was elected the first female mayor for the City of Nashville in 2002 and was in the first year of her second term as mayor at the time of her death. Her church membership was with the Nashville United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Bill Perry of Nashville; two daughters, Constance (Tom) Thomas of Adel and Peighton (Sean) Van Ausdall of Nashville; two sons, Justin (Amity) Perry of Atlanta and Cavan (Dana) Perry of Nashville; her mother, Annie Lee Tate of Blue Ridge; two sisters, Susie Morris of Tampa, Fla. and Kathy Russell of Chapel Hill, N.C.; three brothers, Charlie Tate, Jr. of Winter Haven, Fla., Richard Tate of Haines City, Fla. and Robert Tate of Brandon, Fla.; and nine grandchildren. A private family funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, in the Nashville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dwight Bishop and the Rev. Richard Trawick officiating. A public service of praise and worship will immediately follow at 11 a.m. in the Family Life Center of the Church with the Rev. Rick Lanford and the Rev. Dell Young officiating. A private service of entombment will be held in Nashville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Randy Russell officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today in the Family Life Center of the Nashville United Methodist Church. Pallbearers included Chad Morris, Tate Morris, Luke Morris, William Morris, Peter Russell, John Mark Russell, Michael Russell, David Russell, Taylor Tate, Clay Tate, William Tate.
