He was born Nov. 1, 1942 in Atkinson County to Ella Mae Douglas Pope of Waycross and the late Sam Higgins Pope. He was co-owner and manager of Independent Express Trucking Co. He was a member of the Ray City First Baptist Church and had served in the United States Air Force. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Geri Best Pope of Ray City; two sons, Jim (Allison) Pope of Ray City and David (Amy) Pope of Valdosta; two sisters, Sandra Jacobs of Waycross and Malinta Peek of Moultrie; brother, Edwin Pope of Alma; five grandsons, Reid Pope, Cory Pope, Carter Pope, Nickolas Pope and Christopher Pope. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on July 22 at Ray City First Baptist Church with Rev. John Patten officiating. Committed sang "It is Well With My Soul" and "Nothing Can Erase." The congregation sang "H Keeps Me Singing," accompanied by Libby Boatright. Interment was in Beaver Dam Cemetery. Pallbearers were Russell Bates, Elliot Garner, Bud Ray, Johnny Cooper, Gerald Chason, Wayne Peters. Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
