 Rufus J. Powell, 82, of Alapaha died Oct. 26, 2009, at Berrien County Hospital.

 Born March 19, 1927, in Colquitt County to the late Dave and Hattie Bell Green 
Powell, he was a retired rural mail carrier, charter member of the Alapaha 
Lion's Club and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a faithful member of Alapaha United 
Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and participated 
in the monthly Men's Prayer Breakfast. He loved sports and helped coach the 
first-ever Little League baseball team in Alapaha. He was also an avid golfer. 
He was married to Lucy Hendley Powell who died in 1999.

 Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Millie and Louis Sutton of 
Dublin; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Gail Powell of Alapaha and 
Keith and Janet Powell of Nashville; five grandchildren, Heather (Jeremy) 
Speich, Ryan (Raquel) Powell, Kristin Powell, Christopher Sutton, Andrew 
Sutton; sister, Winnie Dorsey of Norman Park. He was preceded in death by three 
brothers and two sisters.

 Funeral services were held Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at Alapaha United Methodist 
Church with the Revs. Bruce Vaughn and Willie Heath officiating. Joe Dixon and 
Millie Sutton each gave a eulogy. Lisa Tucker sang "God Loves You," and the 
congregation sang "Amazing Grace," accompanied by Faye Waller, pianist.

 Interment was in Fletcher Cemetery. A eulogy was given by Phillip Hoffman.

 Pallbearers were Jeremy Speich, Ryan Powell, Christopher Sutton, Andrew 
Sutton, Ricky Roberson, Richard Powell.

 Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
