Powell died at a Tallahassee, Fla. hospital Friday after a long illness. He was 62. He was a son of the late John W.E. and Lelia Knight Powell, pioneer residents of Berrien County. Mr. Powell a native of Nashville, was connected with the school system for a number of years as a principal and teacher before becoming superintendent in the mid 1940’s. He served two terms as superintendent. He had been principal of Alapaha High School for a number of years and was also principal of Nashville High School for a short time before Berrien County Schools were consolidated. Mr. Powell was graduated from the University of Georgia and was a member of the Georgia Education Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nashville. Survivors include his wife, the former Couturier Long, of Nashville, a son, Dr. James W. Powell of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and two grandchildren; also one niece and one nephew. Funeral plans were handled by Lovein Funeral Home of Nashville. The services were held at 4 p.m. on Monday at Nashville First Baptist Church with the pastor, Rev. John Hunt, and Rev. Felton Gaskins conducting the rites. Interment was in city cemetery. Mrs. N.G. Houston served as organist and Mrs. LaJuana Nutt sang, “The Lord’s Prayer.” Active pallbearers were: P.J. Griner Jr., A.T. Bragdon, Wayne Harris, Robert E. Griffin, N.G. Houston III and Johnny Drake. Honorary pallbearers included the following: P.A. Harris Jr., P.A. Harris Sr., Jack Knight, Thomas Futch, C.W. Anderson, Frank Paulk, Gilbert Mobley, S.T. Bragdon, Joe Harvey Jr., Edwin Gaskins, Maurice McMillan, James H. Perry, Lossie L. Gaskins, Sam Akins, Jerry Taylor, Leon Levin, Johnny W. Avera, Sheriff Walter Gaskins, Wycliff Roberts, R.A. Stallings, Dumps Griffin and W.K. Gaskins. Approximately 60 members of Berrien County school faculties sat in a body, with schools dismissed at noon to allow the teachers an opportunity to attend. Business houses in Nashville were closed during the hour of service.
