Born June 17, 1920 in Lowndes Co. to the late James and Sara Rebecca Boone Herring, she was a homemaker and attended Nashville Mission. She was married to Henry J. Ray who died December 13, 2000. "Granny" was a very special lady who small stature was enlarged by her happy personality. She never met a stranger who wasn't a friend in a very short time. She was a great CB fan and with a handle of "RC Granny," she soon captivated a huge array of CB friends. She also served in a most efficient and friendly manner as "hostess with the mostest" at Hardees during the early 1990's. Her many friends especially included the staff of "The Berrien Press." She quickly took her place in their hearts as their special route carrier. For many years she was on time when the paper arrived at the back door. The staff knew when 11 a.m. was near as "Granny" pulled right alongside the van to load her papers and left for Ray City. She soon was joined by her husband and together they made a team that proudly claimed "The Berrien Press" as "their paper." The route was taken over by her son-in-law, Buddy, when she was unable to take care of it because of failing health. Survivors include two daughters, Ouida (Buddy) Bennett and Helen (Harrell) Smith, both of Kingsland; two sons, Vernon (Betty) Ray of Kingsland and Monty (Durinda) Ray of Ray City; one brother, Edgar Herring of Valdosta; one sister, Mary Nell Wilson of Ray City; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 3 great- great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 18 in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Revs. Terrell Roberts and Randy Shelton officiating. Barbara Jean Herring sang "Amazing Grace" and "Precious Memories." The Howell Harpe group sang "When the Roll is Called up Yonder." Interment was in Westview Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dale Bennett, Kevin Smith, Nelson Plancia, Wade English, Brian Simpson, Derrell Wilson. Lovein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
