Born Feb. 27, 1923, to the late Ethel Weatherly and William Jasper "Jap" Rowan, Sr., he was raised in Cook Co. in the Massee area. He was drafted and served in WWII 1943-45 where he joined the Army Reserve. He came back to Cook County in 1945. On August 31, 1946 he married his sweetheart, Clara M. Parker, daughter of James Caulie and Ora Lee Pafford Parker. In 1950 the Reserves called him to Korea, and after serving, he was discharged from the Army. He then joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and served in Korea and Vietnam. After coming back to the states, he was stationed in Charleston, SC. He then went to Thailand, returned to the states, and was later stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. He returned to the states and was stationed at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta for four and one-half years. He and his family went to Okinawa for three years and from there to Jacksonville, FL for four years. He was in the armed services for a total of 24-1/2 years. While in Jacksonville, he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service. After seven years of work, he was medically retired. He received his high school diploma in 2001. He was involved in the DAV. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Clara Parker Rowan; a granddaughter, Julie Chevon Rowan, 31; nine brothers, six sisters. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Mary Rowan of Lake Park, Dennis and Rosemary Rowan of Jacksonville, FL and Marshall and Tanyia Rowan of Sanderson, FL; one daughter, Donna Rowan of Adel; nine grandchildren, Brandy Rowan, Joshua (Trisha) Rowan, and Hannah (B.J) Bennett, all of Adel, Meagan Rowan of Lawrenceville, Alan, Brent and Clayton Rowan of Jacksonville, Kevin (Nichole) Turner of Bradenton, FL, Blake Rowan of Sanderson; ten great-grandchildren, Kourtney White of Titusville, FL, Kristina Rowan, Kody Wright, Joshua Rowan, Jr., Hunter Bennett, Tyler and Thomas Rowan of Adel, Tyson Rowan of Savannah, Christopher and Sean Rowan of Miami, FL; one brother and sister-in-law, Andrew "Jack" and Maxine Rowan of Deland, FL; one sister and brother-in-law, Myrtice and H.L. Guthrie of Deland, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. at Massee Baptist Church with the Revs. Ron Stinson and Stanley Hendricks officiating, Wayne and Mary Nell Boyette sang "How Great Thou Art," "I Call It Home," "Go Rest High On That Mountain," and "Amazing Grace." A special selection was played, entitled "Grandpa Tell Me 'bout the Good Old Days." Burial followed at Long Bridge Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Randy Simmons, Donnie Simmons, Curtis Hamilton, Lindsey Parrish, Jesse Henderson, Dorsey Holt. Honorary pallbearers were Midway Group, Wayne Gibbs, Jack Bryan, Travis Flowers, Monte Cowart, Mike Gibbs. Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home of Adel was in charge of arrangements.
