The daughter of the late Thomas and Hazel Beatty, she was a native of Dawson and had been a resident of St. Simons Island for the past two years. She lived in Alapaha for over 50 years and was employed by the Berrien County School System for 38 years as a history teacher at Elementary and Middle Schools in Enigma, Alapaha and Nashville. She was a graduate of Georgia College in Milledgeville where she received her Master's Degree in Education. She was a member of Alapaha United Methodist Church where she was a long-time member of United Methodist Women. She attended Wesley United Methodist Church in Frederica in recent years. She was a member of the National Education Association, Georgia Association of Educators and the Georgia Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Shearer, and a grandson, Heath Swinehart. Survivors include two daughters and sons in law, Roxanne Shearer and Sam Koogler of Fairfield, Virginia, and Duane Shearer and Bob Swinehart of st. Simons; three grandchildren, Will and Frances Koogler of Fairfieldd and Savannah Swinehart of St. Simons Island. Funeral services were held July 7 at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Wright Culpepper officiating. A graveside service was held at 4 p.m. on July 7 at Fletcher Cemetery in Alapaha with the Revs. Mike Gibbs and Bruce Vaughn officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Lincoln Gaskins, Woody Wood, Edwin Gaskins, Joe Dixon, Bill Smith, Bobby Mathis. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home of Brunswick and Lovein Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.
