She was born February 25, 1928, in Nashville to the late John S. and Evie Carter Atkins. On August 20, 1950, she married James Horace Sheffield who preceded her in death on October 16, 1993. A graduate of Nashville High School, she attended ABAC and graduated from the University of Georgia. Love for all God’s children gave Sally her calling in life. She taught public schools in Winter haven, FL, Houston, TX, Damascus, GA, and Cairo where she taught for 38 years. After retirement, she substituted for another ten years in the Grady County school system. She was a very active member of First Baptist Church, Cairo, the Retired Teacher Association, and Cairo Woman’s Club. Survivors include a son and daughter in law, James H. Sheffield, Jr. (Clalre) of Roswell; daughters, Lana Sheffield Ball and Susan Sheffield, both of Atlanta; grandchildren, Lamar Q. Ball, IV of Nashville, Josh S. Ball of Atlanta, Sam (Sarah) Ball of Madison, James H. Sheffield, III, and Joseph W. Sheffield, both of Roswell; sister-in-law, Dorothy Akins and Lucy Akins, both of Nashville, and Kathleen Cook of Colquitt; brother-in-law, Herman Sheffield of Colquitt. A graveside service and interment were held Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Cemetery, Nashville. A funeral service was also held December 1 at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Cairo, with Dr. Joe Allen and Dr. Ron McCaskill officiating.
