He was born September 6, 1931 in Monroe County to the late Joseph Howard and Sue Lee Lane Smith. He was a retired superintendent of schools for Berrien County and a member of Nashville United Methodist Church, where he served in various capacities, most notably his many years of service in the chancel choir. He was an Air Force veteran and was assigned to the Air Force Drum and Bugle Corps, Washington, DC. Survivors include his wife, Lucille McKinney Smith of Nashville; and a sister- in-law, Claudette Smith of Griffin. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Sue Smith and Angelina Jane Smith. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Jan. 13 at Nashville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dwight Bishop and Tegler Greer officiating. Renee Gaskins, organist, played the processional and recessional which included "Pass It On" and "It is Well With My Soul." Interment was at 3 p.m. in Orange Hill Cemetery in Hawkinsville. Active pallbearers were Rudy Hancock, Randy Hancock, Rodney Hancock, Walter Patten, Jerry Griffin, Bernard Burnette. honorary pallbearers were Hank Decker, Howard Ray, Bo Lovein, Steve Dixon, Dan Taylor, Donnie Connell, Bob Lovein, Fred Tucker, Fred Lamb, George Rowan, Jr., Donald Powell, Rossie McMillan.
