"Bill" Smith, Sr., 77, of Sparks died March 3, 2003 at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton. Born March 25, 1925 in Atkinson County to the late Gertrude Hinson and Judge Edwin R. Smith, Sr., he lived most of his life in Berrien and Cook Counties. He was a lay evangelist since 1975 and a member of Sparks United Methodist Church. He served in the South Pacific during WWII with the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, Joy Shierling Smith of Sparks; two sons, William A. "Snuffy" Smith of Sparks and Ralph W. Smith of Valdosta; one daughter, Beth McDaniel of Tifton; three sisters, Betty Hancock of Marietta, Alice Mullins of Macon, Virgie McDermott; eight grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 5 at 3 p.m. at Sparks United Methodist Church with the Revs. Al Lewis and Donnie Swanson officiating. Interment was in Sparks City Cemetery. Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home of Adel was in charge of arrangements.
