Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Ocilla U United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Brenton and the Rev. Virgil Vickers o officiating. Burial will follow at Ocilla Cemetery. Mr. Vickers was born Jan. 19, 1938 in Berrien County to the late Thomas Garthel Garthel and Jennie V. Cribb Vickers. He was a 1956 graduate of Berrien County High School where he participated in football, track, baseball and basketball. He placed third in state track hurdles. He was a graduate of South Georgia College, where he played football as a defensive back and running back for Coach Bobby Bowden and also held the record in the 100-yard dash for 25 years. Mr. Vickers later received his bachelor’s degree at Georgia Southern University and a master’s degree at Georgia Southwestern University. He taught and coached at Oglethorpe County High School in Lexington, Jeff Davis County High S School in Hazlehurst, Berrien County High School in Nashville, Ware County High S School in Waycross and Irwin County High School in Ocilla. He was awarded the Southeastern Golden Glove Championship in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1958 and was named Class A High School Track Coach of the Year in 1981, 1982 and 1983, and Class A State Championship Football-Backfield Coach. D During his tenure as head track coach for 14 years in Irwin County, he took the t team to the state finals 14 times. He was a member of the Georgia High School A Athletic Association, Georgia Association of Educators and a board member of S Sunnydale Training Center Inc. He served in the Army National Guard. Mr. V Vickers was a member of Ocilla United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, f fishing, gardening and cooking. Mr. Vickers is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nellie Pate Vickers of Ocilla; daughters and sons-in-law, Jill Victoria Vickers and Drewry Kenneth Massee of Fitzgerald and Jodi Melissa Vickers and Dr. Phillip Marion Roberts of Tifton; son and daughter-in-law, Jason Chadwick “Chad” and Sharise Cunningham Vickers of Evans; grandchildren, Sarah Rebecca Massee, Marion Howard Massee IV, Margaret Grace Massee, Emilee Victoria Roberts, Kathryn “Beth” Elizabeth Roberts, Elyssa Eleanor Roberts, Arden Susann Vickers and Asa Pate Vickers; brother and sister-in-law, Tommie Garthel and Martha Anne Douglas Vickers; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Della Elizabeth Pate Brown; and se several nieces and nephews.
