Born February 18, 1927 in Berrien County to the late Willie and Viola Mathis Wood, he was a retired senior chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy, and a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a member of Ray City United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge #967 (past Exalted Ruler), VFW, Retired Enlisted and Fleet Reserve Associations, and was a ham radio operator. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Walsh Wood of Nashville; three daughters, Laura Conigliaro and Diane Gallion, both of Naugatuck, CT, Sharon Carpenter of Oviedo, FL; one son, George V. Wood of Rialto, CA; three sisters, Willene Hunter of Nashville, Velma Jefferson and Helen Clements, both of Ray City; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held August 23 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Mitchell officiating. Cremains were buried in Beaver Dam Cemetery.
