Born November 10, 1922 in Georgetown to the late Shafter William and Louise A. Young, he joined the Navy December 1, 1940 and retired December 1, 1970. He served in the South Pacific 1942-43 during World War II and was assigned to aerial gunnery War Bond tour with Robert Stack in 1944. He served in the Korean War in the 1950s and the Vietnam War in the 1960s. After retirement, he worked for Southern Concrete Co. in Albany. He was a member of American Legion Post 30 in Albany, serving as Post Commander in 1980. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Disabled Veterans Association. He was married to the late Dorothy Rebecca McKrackin on August 19, 1945. She died June 22, 2001. Survivors include two sons, Don V. Young, Jr., of Nashville and James William Young of Senoia; one stepdaughter, Karen Langowski of Albuquerque, New Mexico; six grandchildren, Cheryl, Brian, Kimberly, Katie, Jon and Audrey. Funeral services were held April 25 at Anderson National Cemetery.
