Bibb County Georgia Bios James M. Blount File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Barbara Walker Winge,barbarawinge@yahoo.com Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/bibb.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm JAMES M. BLOUNT James M. Blount of Macon, who represents the Sixth Congressional District of Georgia in the Congress of the United States, was elected to the Forty-third, Forty-fourth, Forty-fifth, Forty-sixth, and Forty-seventh Congresses, as a Democrat, receiving, at his last election, a vote of 8,373, without any opposing votes. During his service in Congress, Mr. Blount has not made a great number of extended speeches, but has been constantly heard from on the floor of the House, whenever any bill or section of a bill was under discussion, that by any means would be likely to draw a dollar from the Treasury, and which in his judgement was not absolutely necessary as a public expense. Indeed, he has been and still is one of the most faithful and vigilant "watch-dogs of the Treasury," evidently sincere in the belief that charity does "begin at home," and has no claims upon the funds of the government, made up, as they are, almost solely from accumulations of the hard-earned taxes unavoidable levied upon the rich and poor alike, and under laws requiring them to be used only for the purpose of maintaining and carrying on the business of good government. None who know him well will doubt his efficiency as a member of Congress, or his honor as a man. Ref: Headley, P. C., PUBLIC MEN OF TO-DAY, 1882, S. S. Scranton & Company, Hartford, p. 292.
