Rawls and Thomas W. Pyles who were married in Alachua County, Florida in 1841. Both of her parents were from Georgia. Thomas, by his own statement had moved to Florida in 1824, most likely from Glynn Co., GA where his parents, Charlotte Wynn and Samuel R. Pyles had lived near Brunswick, GA. Jane A. Rawls' parents are unknown. In 1850, The 7th U. S. Census of Alachua Co., FL shows the family of Thomas W. Piles/Pyles as Jane, Julia, Thomas and Clifford (female). Two years later, Thomas died in May of 1852. He is buried in the Dell Cemetery on land that his neighbors (the Dell brothers) owned. During the next decade, Julia's Uncle, Samuel R. Pyles (Jr.) became the Administrator of her father's Estate and was Guardian to her and her siblings. The Ancient Records of Alachua County, especially two large files (71_2 & 71_3) contain over 300 pieces of paper between 1852 and 1862 that reveals life from the children's earliest age through teen years until after the girl's married. Their widowed mother, Jane A. Pyles remarried John Crews Pelot, but did not act as their guardian until after the death of her brother-in-law in April of 1862. During that time, she too had many actions of receiving from her former husband's estate, funds to raise and educate the children. Julia was educated around St. Marys, Marietta and finally in Macon, Georgia at the Wesleyan Female College in 1860-1861. Her Uncle faithfully provided funds for travel, room and board as well as supplies and the education that she received. After the Civil War, Julia Pyles married Samuel Pelot McDonell and was living in Archer, Florida on the 1880 Census. His occupation was Census Enumerator. Her young brother, Thomas S. Pyles was also living in their household and drew a Civil War CSA Pension from the late 1880's well into the 1900's. Julia's sister, Clifford Pyles married John Frasier Livingston of Madison, Florida and had a large family that are depicted on the 1880 U. S. Census. Her husband's occupation was Denistry. Judging by Census records well into the 1900's, there were more children and probably the only descendants of Thomas W. Pyles and Jane A. Rawls. Julia and Samuel McDonell had one son born before 1880. He died in early infancy and is buried in the Archer, Florida area. Sadly, the exact date of death of Julia, Clifford and Thomas is unknown as well as their final resting place. Perhaps a Clifford Pyles Livingston descendant can fill in the missing data. Estate and administration records depicting the records from 1852 to beyond 1870 can be accessed on the Alachua County, FL website at: http://www.clerk-alachua-fl.org/clerk/searchmenu.html Several items, including 71_3_128 show what tuition and cost for classes for Julia Pyles on October 15, 1860 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, GA. The cost of living and traveling between Alachua County, Florida and many places in Georgia are contained in the papers too. Additional Comments: Julia's grandfather, Samuel R. Pyles was a Colonel in the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812. He served several terms as State Senator representing Glynn Co., GA to the GA General Assembly at Milledgeville between 1814 and 1823. Her great grandfather, John Piles had moved from St. Augustine, East Florida when the Spanish returned to Florida in 1785. His father, Samuel Piles and family had moved from Georgia to East Florida in 1762 where they lived at the corner of Treasury and St. George Street. Her great grandmother, Charlotte Winn/Wynn was born outside of Savannah and descended from Barnard and Bradley families as well as the Winn/Wynn lines of early Georgia.
