These men dispersed, gradually, all over the South and Southeast. Among them was Abraham Davis, who according to family tradition, was the father of Abram Davis, who was the grandfather of my father and for whom my father was named. He was said to have been a soldier in the Revolutionary War; however, I find no mention of his sevice in the Georgia Records. But since there is mention of Abraham Davis from Montgomery County, North Carolina, and as the Davis' were said to come from that state; and as the Quakers, we know came from there; and as my grandfather told me his people came from Montgomery County and last, as there was no County of that name in Georgia at that time, the conclusion is that this family is all of the same man. This man's son, Abram Davis, married a Miss Ashley and was the father of several children, among whom were David L Davis, Joseph Davis, and Gardner Lemual Davis, my grandfather. Abram Davis, our Great-Grandfather, died in 1824, 1826, or 1827 when my grandfather was a little boy. His widow then married again and his children all left home. David Davis went to Talbot County and later about 1835 went to Texas were he became wealthy in the cattle business. Gardner Lemuel Davis went to live with his brother David, in Talbot County, and stayed there until his brother moved to Texas, then he went to Monroe County, Georgia and after going with the Monroe County Musketeers to the Indian War in Florida in 1835-1836, was married in 1837-1838. Joseph Davis and the others went to Alabama and when he visited us in 1880 told us that Alabama was full of Davis Kinfolk. In person, this Joseph Davis resembled Ex-President Jefferson Davis so much, it was a matter of comment. He said his father and the father of Jefferson Davis were cousins. My grandfather, Gardner Lemuel Davis, also was a veteral of the Mexican War, and as an old man, served with the militia around Atlanta near the close of the War Between the States. On his return from the Seminole War in Florida, Gardner Lemual Davis, born Feb 5, 1817 died May 2, 1891; was married to Mary Polly Chambless who was born Feb 1, 1814,, and died Feb 27, 1887. This marraige occured about 1837 and the following children came: Mary Jane Davis, born Sept 2, 1839 died July 14, 1894 and married William dent of Crawford County, Georgia Rachel Saphronia Davis born July 16, 1840 died July 14, 1894 and who married A J Williams, Bibb County, Georgia Abraham Josephus Davis, born Feb 25, 1843 died Feb 18, 1911 and who married Mary Jane Elizabeth Parker of Bibb County Georgia on Sept 1, 1867 Henry Gardner Davis born May 18, 1845 and died Feb 8, 1885 and who married Ann Eliza Brown of Monroe County, Georgia Sara M Davis, born Dec 7, 1849 died May 1, 1899 and who married James R Hicks of Crawford County, Georgia Abram Josephus Davis ran away from home to join Ross' Volunteers, State Troops near Savannah, Georgia. At the expiration of his term of enlistment for six months, he went with his brother Henry Gardner Davis, to Virginia and joined the 14th Georgia Regiment, Company A. He was with that command until shot and captured at Petersburg, then held guarded by negro troops until August 1865 when he was paroled and sent home. He was wounded three times, once in the left hip(either at Gettysburg or Fredericksburg) and was slapped on the knee with a pieve of spent shell at the Wilderness. He was shot down at Petersburg with a Minie Ball lodged in his left hip, and which he carried to his grave. Henry Gardner Davis served with his command until the end of the war. He was only sixteen years old when he joined the army. My father (AJD) drew the appointment of drummer, and gave it to his young brother, as he had promised his mother to care for him. On Sunday morning Sept 1, 1867, Rev Sam Burnett officiating, Abram Josephus Davis, and Mary Jane ELizabeth parker were married. This union gave to the world the following children: Gardner Lemuel Davis, born August 6, 1868, died Dec 16, 1914; was married April 30, 1907 to Ethel kate Abel. Their children were Martha Abel Davis born Feb 5, 1908, and Lemuel Annie Elizabeth Davis born Feb 15, 1914. John Andrew Davis, born Jan 25, 1871 married Willie Newton McGraw Bishop, Feb 23, 1989. Willie Died August 21, 1907, leaving a son, Abram James davis, born August 10, 1906. He then married her only sister, Esther Pauline Bishop, Dec 10, 1907. This son "Abe" so called after his grandfather davis, was graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Georgia June 3, 1929.
