He was the son of John Lawshe and Eleanor Chamberlain. He married Cherokee Hawkisn 10 August 1829. Cherokee Hawkins, born 16 March 1805 in Ga/ died 26 February 1849 in Water Valley, Yalobusha, Ms. She was the daughter of Benjamin Hawkins and Lavinia Downs. Notes for Lewis Madison Lawshe: Served in the War of 1812 and both Seminole Indian Wars under Gen. Andrew Jackson. When Grant occupied Water Valley and burned his home, his new worth went from a quarter million dollars to nothing over night. He then set his slaves free. He was 75 years old but went to Virginia and fought through the Second Battle of Manassas. Lewis Lawshe moved from Georgia in 1839 and bought a 640 acre farm in Water Valley, yalobusha Cty, Mississippi, owned in 1973 by R. B. Lawshe. He later moved to Texas and died there. A Lawshe cemetery in Water Valley is overgrown and attempts to locate it in 1998 failed. Children of Lewis Lawshe and Cherokee Hawkins are: 1. Isaac H. Lawshe, born 10 Sept. 1820, died 10 Oct. 1829 2. William H. Lawshe, Sr., born 29 Oct. 1822 in Bibb, County, Ga. / died 6 Sept. 1859 married Mary "Marky" Markette. 3. John A. Lawshe, born 8 Dec. 1824/ died 8 Dec. 1824 4. Lewis Madison Lawshe, Jr., born 27 Mar. 1826 in nibb County, Ga./ died 3 Jan. 1888/ married (1) Mary Jane Hears 21 Oct. 1845 in Water Valley, Yalobusha, Ms./ married (2) Jane Bankhead 24 Aug. 1859 in Yalobusha Co., Ms. Marrie (3) Mary Greenhaw after 1882 There is a great book written by a lady whose last name is I believe Wilde. I have loaned it out so I can't look it up but the name of the book is "True Women" and it is about this Lewis Lawshe and him family moving from Crawford County to Texas.
