Bartlett, Jr. tbgfairfax@msn.com Woodson Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Bibb County and was an Indian burial ground before Lizella (originally Warrior) became a white settlement in 1821. There are three known Indian mounds in the cemetery. The cemetery was situated between the Bartlett and Pender family homesites (south of what is now Lake Arrowhead Park) and most of the burials consist of those families . The cemetery is located in the woods on a hill about 300 yards to the left of the road going to Arrowhead Lake Park - about a city block before reaching the Park entrance gate. (Turn off Columbus Road about a mile before reaching Lizella.) See NOTES below for more information about the cemetery. Bethena Elizabeth Singleton Jones 1912 (only marker) Others buried there marked with field stones include: The last burial was in 1912 and the grave marker (only one in the cemetery except for field stone markings) shows Bethena Elizabeth Singleton Jones. (Lurany?) 1 f NOTES: Woodson Cemetery February 12, 2005-James W. Allen I went searching to see if I could locate the infamous Woodson cemetery again. I tried once before without any luck. Today I believe I have it located. I talked with a Mrs. Long that lives directly in front of where this area is and she knows it to be a cemetery, but knows nothing of it's history. She said there were protesters there when a business was surveying to put a trailer park beside this area. The trailer park was supposed to be built on land that was owned by local historian and geneology person, Bobby Stokes. I found it to be disheartening after searching for some time to locate the place. What I found was a wooded area with no markers at all. The actual cemetery itself apparently at one time had a wooden fence around its outside, but all that is there now is the front fence line and it's fallen down. I did find an area just outside the actual cemetery enclosure area that had stone slabs laid out in an area about eight (8) feet wide by about twenty-five (25) feet long. This appears to be some type of stone flooring where maybe an outbuilding once stood. It could have been used as a shed or building to go beside the cemetery at one time. Maybe it held tools or something of that nature. The GPS coordinates are 32 degrees 48.687N, 083 degrees 47.844W, 527 ft. I found it interesting there was a grave marker inside of a small fenced area about 30 feet away and closer to the roadway. Mrs. Long stated this marker had the initials " E.J. " and the date 1812 on it at one time, but that is now broken up and unreadable. I photograph the area of the cemetery and the small fenced area with the one marker. The cemetery plot is located on the property of Mrs. Long at 2941 Arrowhead Drive, Lizella, Georgia 31052. A Mr. Tidwell who lives down the road and another man I talked with said they thought at one time some native American indians might have been buried at this same location, but there is no proof that is true. I would like to have listed names here from markers, but there were none there to see. I did see a couple of sunken spots, but not sure if they were or could have been graves at one time.
