McGregor, a resident of the vicinity of Newton, in the county of Baker, in the State of Georgia, who being by me first duly sworn according to law, deposes and says: I am the identical John A. McGregor, who served under the name of John A. McGregor, as a Sergeant in the company commanded by Captain Isaac E. Holmes, in the First regiment of Georgia Volunteers, commanded by Colonel H. R. Jackson, in the war with Mexico; that I enlisted at Columbus, Georgia on or about the 17th day of June, A.D. 1846, for the term of twelve months, and was honorably discharged at New Orleans about the 30th day of May A.D. 1847. That being duly enlisted, as aforesaid, I actually served sixty days with the Army of the United States in Mexico, or on the coast or frontier thereof, or en route thereto, in the war with that Nation, which service was as follows: I Proceeded with my Company to Mobile, Ala and with the Company Embarked there for Mexico, landed at Mouth of Rio Grande, marched thence to Monterey, thence to Tampico, sailed thence to Vera Cruz after Battle then marched thence to Alverado thence to Jalapa, thence to New Orleans. (a) That I am sixty two years of age, having been born at Macon, Georgia on the 5th day of December 1825. (remainder of sub-paragraph options are crossed out) (page 2 of form) That I am ----- married; that the maiden name of my wife was Margaret Jane Johnson, to whom I was married at Randolph County, in the State of Georgia, on the 12th day of June, A.D. 1849; that my wife is now living. That the name of my present wife is Margaret Jane McGregor. That in support and proof of my right to pension I tender herewith, under the regulations prescribed by the Secretary of the Interior, the following evidence: affidavits of ___________________________________ That I have not heretofore made application for pension. That I am not a pensioner of the United States: That since my discharge from said service I have resided as follows, to wit: in Lee County Ga two years, in Macon, Ga two years, Randolph Co., Ga five years, Terrell County, Ga three years, Decatur Co. Ga one year, Mitchell Co. Ga. ten years, Baker Co. McGregor known to me as the person described in, and who signed and executed the foregoing declaration for pension and whom I certify to be a credible person and of good repute for truth and veracity in the community in which he lives , who being by me first duly sworn, deposes and says that he has read (if claimant cannot read, read to him and so state in acknowledgement,) the foregoing declaration and knows the contents thereof, and that all of the facts therein stated are true. State of Georgia, County of Monroe, SS: Before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the county of Monroe on this 4, day of December, A.D. 1888, personally appeared Gilbert Wright, who being by my first duly sworn, deposes and says: I have known John A. McGregor for the space of forty one years, and I was requested by said John A. McGregor to sign my name as a witness to the declaration for pension under the Act of January 29, 1887, sworn to by him on the 24 day of November, A.D. 1888; and that at his request I so signed my name a witness: that the said John A. McGregor is the identical person who signed the foregoing declaration, and who is therein described, and who was enlisted in the company of Captain Isaac E. Holmes in the regiment commanded by Col. Henry R. Jackson, in the Mexican war, as in the said declaration set out. No. 1. That the said John A. McGregor actually served sixty days with the Army or Navy of the United States in Mexico, or on the coast or frontier, or en route thereto, in the war with that Nation, that I swear to these facts from knowledge obtained as follows: by serving in the same Regment with him & being personally acquainted with him at the time & since. McGregor is sixty two years of age, having been born on or about the 5th day of December, A.D. 1825, at Macon, in the State of Georgia, and that I swear to these facts from knowledge obtained as follows: from him & others of his acquaintances & from the time I have known him. L.G. Rowell with and in the county and State aforesaid, John A. McGregor, aged Seventy four years, a resident of The Town of Newton, county of Baker, State of Georgia, who being sworn according to law, declares that he is a pensioner of the United States, enrolled at the Knoxville Tenn Pension Agency at the rate of $8 per month, under the act of January 29, 1887 or the act of March 3, 1891, on account of the service of Mexican War, in Captain I.E. Holmes Company, C Regiment, 1st , from Georgia June 10, 1846 to June 10, 1847 in the Mexican War; and that he is wholly disabled for manual labor by reason Old age and Nervous disability and is in such destitute circumstances that $8 per month are insufficient to provide him with the necessaries of life, and that he believes himself to be entitled to an increase to $12 per month under the provisions of the act of January 5, 1893. That he appoints himself of Newton, county of Baker, State of Georgia, true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim. That his post-office address is Newton, county of Baker State of Georgia. NOTE: John A. McGregor was born in Macon, Bibb County, Ga in 1825 and served in the Mexican War in a unit formed in Macon, Ga. He also served as Captain of Co. E, 17th Georgia from Mitchell Co., GA. He eventually settled in Baker Co., GA where he applied for a pension based on his service in the Mexican War.
