It was built during World WarI, disbandoned and rebuilt for World War II. It was located on Riggans Mill Road, east of town, on land owned by Harry Stillwell Edwards, a well known Southern writer. All that remains on the property is the Georgia Forrestry Commission, Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co. and various other industries. Camp Wheeler had 17 Battalions during WWII. The 16th being the only Black Battalion. I do not remember how many actual troops were there, but Macon was nearly doubled in population during World War II.
