The names of 338 individuals have been subscribed to the pledges contained in the resolutions of the meeting. – From some individual members of the committee no returns have been received where we understand that several names have been subscribed to the proceedings. Should they be returned, they will be made public hereafter. The committee would remark, that although the project has met with some opposition, yet they believe the desired object has been accomplished – that this great evil which has long corrupted and debased the most estimable privilege of a free people, has received a permanent check by the exertions of our citizens. THE COMMITTEE In accordance with the views of the meeting they request the publication of the proceedings in the several Gazettes of this city. Macon, June 22, 1838. In pursuance of the notice previously given, a large number of our most respectable citizens from the several political parties indiscriminately, met in the court house in the city of Macon for the purpose of lending their aid in carrying out the presentments of the last Grand Jury in relation to the practice of electioneering by candidates in this county. On motion of Gen. L. L. Griffin, the meeting was organized by calling Maj. Edward D. Tracy to the Chair, and John J. Gresham, Esq. to act as a Secretary. On motion of Gen. Grifin, a committee was appointed by the Chair to draft a preamble and resolutions expressive of the sentiments of the meeting on the subject proposed, which committee consisted of Messrs. James A. Nisbet, Simri Rose, Wm. Solomon, Levi Eckley, D. B. Butler, Jehu Campbell, and Dr. R. H. Randolph. The committee retired for a short time, returned and reported a Preamble and resolutions which were taken up by the sections, and after the adoption of the amendments and substitutes proposed by Mr. W. B. Cone, stand as follows. Whereas the Grand Jury at the last Term of the superior Court of Bibb county, did recommend the suppression of the alarming evil of electioneering by treating in spirituous Liquors and public Barbecues; and whereas a number of respectably citizens of this city have called a meeting to carry out the Presentments of the Grand Jury on that subject; and believing that the Jury and the individuals whose names were appended to that advertisement, were actuated by no other motives or principles than to correct evils which prevail to an alarming extent in our county leading to corrupt and demoralize a large portion of our population, and destructive of the purity of the elective franchise. Ge it therefore Resolved, That we will support no Candidate for the Legislature or other office in this county, who will himself electioneer by treating in Liquors of any kind, or by giving Barbeques, or who will place money in the hands of others to do so for him. Resolved further, That we will support no candidate for the Legislature or other office in this county, who will either buy, or place money in the hands of a friend to buy votes in any manner whatever, to gain his election. Resolved further, That we will not countenance any individual who will either by false argument or by force, endeavor to induce another to vote contrary to that which his untrammelled conscience shall dictate to him. Resolved, That we will subscribe a pledge to the foregoing effect; and that a committee of four from each Captain’s District, be appointed by the Chairman, to obtain singular pledges from the citizens of their respective Districts, and that the names of all such be published in the public gazettes of this place. Resolved, That a Central Committee of three be appointed by the Chairman of this meeting, to whom the different District Committees shall report on or before the first day of August next. The question being taken on the final passage of the Preamble and Resolutions, they were unanimously adopted. The committees appointed by the Chairman under the fourth resolution consist of For the City Districts. – James Goddard, M. E. Rylander, George Jewett, Simri Rose Godfrey’s District. – John Bailey, Jacob Johnston, Irwin Bullock, Levi Calhonn. Howard’s District. – Roland Bivins, B. H. Moultrie, Saml B. Hunter, Timothy Matthews. East Macon. – Luke Ross, Geo. B. Wardlaw, Anderson Rice, Austin Ellis. Rutland’s District. – Peter Stubbs, Thos. Simmons, Aaron Lessell, Rev. Mr. Brown. Hazard’s District. – Edmund Gilbert, Arthur Foster, Benj. May, Wm. Perdue. Warrior District. – Thomas Gates, George W. Moore, James Hoy, Jonathan Neal. And the Central Committee under the last resolution, appointed by the Chair consists of Washington Poe, Henry G. Ross, and Everard Hamilton, Esqrs. On motion of James A. Nisbet, Esqr. Resolved that the proceedings of this meeting be signed by the Chairman and Secretary, and published in the gazettes of the city. The meeting was then on motion adjourned. EDW. D.
