$70,000 Damage In Macon Flames

Macon, Ga., November 2, - (Special) – The beautiful home of former Mayor John 
T. Moore, on College street, was destroyed by fire of undetermined origin at 
an early hour this morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Moore, their daughter, Miss Marie and Matthew R. Paul, a roomer, 
were rescued by fireman, all being carried down ladders from the roof of a 
porch where they had fled.

Paul was awakened at 2 o’clock this morning by stifling smoke, and aroused 
members of family, all having difficulty in reaching the roof of the porch 
because of dense smoke.  The atmosphere was heavy and the blinding smoke 
extended for three blocks or more on every side.

Firemen responded to a general alarm, and it was 30 minutes before flames 
burst through the roof.  The building was of virgin pine, having been built 
many years ago, and it burned fiercely notwithstanding the fact that many 
streams of water were poured on it, until 5 o’clock this morning.

Mr.  Moore said his loss on the home would be $50,000 and on furnishings, 
$20,000.

Mr . Moore only a few days ago had been offered a large sum of money for the 
home by a syndicate for an apartment house site.

The house was formerly owned by the Plant family and was one of the first fine 
residences of Macon.  Mr. Moore is a county commissioner and a member of the 
board of education.
