                             SIXTY  YEARS A MEMBER
                                29 August 1901
     Macon Telegraph: Capt. H. P. Wescott of Macon is believed to be the oldest
living member of any military company in Georgia, if not the South. He has been
a member of the Floyd Rifles for sixty years. Capt/ Wescott was showing his
friends yesterday an invitation that was issued by the Floyd Rifles and Macon
Volunteers in 1848. The invitation was to a dance, and read as follows: "Macon,
Feb. 16, 1848. The proprietors of the Floyd House, ' from circumstances too
numerous to mention,'having failed to carry out their contract, the undersigned
managers of the ball on the 22nd inst. now have the pleasure of announcing to
the ladies that the obligation host of the Washington Hall has kindly tendered
his house to the lovers of amusement, and ladies in particular on the above
occasion. Managers: Macon Volunteers--Capt. Z. T. Conner; Lieut. Moses Barnes;
Sergt. Charlie Usher; Private E. H. Harris; Private Bancroft; Floyd
Rifles--Lieut. H. P. Wescott; Lieut. O. G. Sparks; Sergt. Jack Jones; Corpl.
Y|Tom Hardeman; Private R. K. Hines; Private John Babcock; Citizens--A. S.
Wingfield; G. M. Lpgan; L. R. Blake; William Cowls." It will be seen that Capt.
H. P. Wescott is the only living man who was appointed in 1848 as one of the
managers of the dance at that time. At that time the Washington Hall was on the
corner of Mulberry and Second streets and the Floyd House was on the corner of
Third and Mulberry streets.
