Allen, the Mayor of Port Royal, reached the city yesterday. He died suddenly in that place yesterday morning at three o'clock. The particulars are very meagre and unsatisfactory. The intelligence of his death is a surprise to all, as he was in robust health but a short time since. Captain Allen was, at the time of his death, engaged in the business of manufacturing shell lime, and was the Mayor of Port Royal. He was well known in Macon, having been for a long time in business in our city. Before the war he was a member of the firm of Allen & Dunlap, who occupied the stand of Messrs. Rogers, Clancy & Co., and did a very large business. When the war was declared he went in and commanded a company in the regiment of which Colonel J. W. Stubbs was Lieutenant-Colonel. In 1865 he engaged in the cotton packing business with Colonel Stubbs. Subsequently he was a proprietor and publisher of the Barnesville Gazette, when that paper was issued by McMichael & Allen. A year or two since he moved to Port Royal and was soon elected its mayor. He passed safely and bravely through the terrible epidemic and was very active in his ceaseless and untiring efforts for the stricken little seaport. Captain Allen was gentleman of the most unbounded energy, and during the days of his residence here had many friends in this city. His remains will probably reach the city today. John J. Allen served in the 27th Regiment, Company B, Georgia Infantry, CSA.
