HE WAS BIBB'S PIONEER. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Mr. Richard Barfield Had Lived at His Home in the Rutland District Since 1883. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- A DEACON FOR SIXTY-FIVE YEARS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Death Has Removed One of the Most Interesting Characters in the History of Bibb County--Had Seven Sons in Davis's Brigade. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- The remains of Mr. Richard Barfield will be interred in the Rutland district this morning at 11 o'clock. Dr. S. B. Barfield and other members of the family resident in Macon will go out this morning to attend the service. The death of Mr. Richard Barfieldremoves one of the county's most interesting characters, as well as a man who since 1833 has been a useful and prominent citizent of this county. Sixty-three years ago Mr. Barfield bought a small quanity of land on which he located the home where he died. He and his estimable wife, who died two years ago, undertook, alone and unassisted , to develop their crude forest home into one of comfort and convenience. As their family increased, they increased their landed possessions, and finally owned about four thousand acres of land in that section of the state. When war was declared between the North and the South, seven of Mr. and Mrs. Barfield's sons were old enough, and enlisted. They fought bravely, and three of them returned to their father's home bearing the marks of bloody conflict. One never returned. His name was Michael Green. He was killed seventeen miles above Macon, while resisting Stoneman's raid. The seven warriors were John T., S. F., Richard Henry Lee, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Francis Marion, and Michael Green, Michael, who was killed, was the youngest of those enlisted in the army; all of them joined Davis' brigade. Mr. and Mrs. Barfield succeeded in rearing fifteen children, ten of whom were sons. The three sons who were too young to join the army are S. B., James S. and Robert Leonidas. Two daughters survive-- Mrs. James F. Dupree of Rome and Mrs. James Whiteside of this county. The three deceased daughters were Mrs. W. R. Busbee, Mrs. C. M. Dupree and Mrs. J. M. Heard. When 22 years old, Mr. Barfield was made a deacon in the Baptist church, and from that time until his death he worked faithfully for the church and remained a deacon. Out of the large family of children and grandchildren it is their boast that none of them have drank whiskey or been guilty of other follies, but, on the other hand, are steady, reliable citizens, who have been a credit to the community in which they live. Mrs Barfield died about two years ago at the age of 86 years and six months. Her husband died Thursday night at the age of 86 and about nine months. His death was caused by paralysis and a genaeral breaking down. But Mr. Barfield was vigorous and active for some of his years until quite recently. The home is thirteen miles from Macon, but when it was first settled by Mr. Barfield the distance, on account of the winding roads was twenty-five miles. It is in the upper portion of Rutland district. All of the surviving members of the family, except possibly Mrs. Dupree of Rome, will attend the funeral.
