(Jim) Carroll williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net December 8, 2013, 4:48 pm The Macon Telegraph 8-25-1950 P17A Eldon Carter Funeral Rites Set Saturday Funeral services for S-Sgt Eldon LaGrant Carter, of 905 Washington Avenue, whose death occurred in Rumania in August 1943, will be held at the graveside in Evergreen Cemetery at 4pm Saturday. The Rev. C. W. Stitt and Chaplain M. A. Lanning of Warner Robins will officiate. Full military honors will be paid at the graveside. Sergeant Carter was born in Bleckley County, the son of John B. Carter and Mrs. Fannie Hardie Carter, and made his home in Macon for five years before he entered in military service on July 2, 1942. He was associated with Sears Roebuck and Company at the time of his enlistment. He went overseas in April 1943 with the Ninth Air Force. On the day of his death, 175 planes were sent to raid the oil fields at Ploesti, Romania and his plane was one of 50 which did not return. The family was notified on Aug. 14, 1943 that he was missing in action. His grave was found and definitely identified in March 1950, found near Ploesti. At the time of his death, he had three Oakleaf Clusters, one Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, one Good Conduct Medal. All were for meritorious service. He is survived by a son, Ronald Carter, Macon; his mother, Mrs. Fannie H. Carter, Conyers; a sister, Mrs. W. R. Williams Jr., Macon; three brothers, Horace R. Carter, Honolulu, James R. Carter, El Paso, Texas, and William J. Carter, Conyers; two aunts, Mrs. Laura Bozeman, Macon and Mrs. Frank P. Mowery, Gila Bend, Ariz.
