B. Connell Dies in Macon Information was received in Barnesville Tuesday that Dr. George B. Connell, president of Mercer University since 1953, died in his car a few minutes after he and his wife had begun a trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., to attend the Southern University Conference. His wife was the former Miss Doris Collier of Barnesville. Dr. Connell spent approximately 20 years as a teacher and administrator at Gordon Military College prior to joining the Mercer staff. He was vice president and dean at Gordon Military College when he left in 1946 to become vice president of Mercer University. Dr. Connell had been under treatment in the hospital last summer for a heart condition, which cut down on his activities for several months. But he had resumed his full schedule several weeks ago. Dr. Connell was loved by Barnesville people. He had filled the pulpit at the First Baptist Church a number of times since he had been in Macon. The survivors include his wife; one son, Capt. Hewlette Connell of Fort Gordon; three grandsons; two brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held Thursday morning in Willingham Chapel at Mercer. Burial was in Penfield Cemetery, Penfield.
