CHERRY Another Well Known Citizen Gone to His Long Home. Mr. Hilliard Judge Cherry died at his home, corner Spring and Oak streets last night a few minutes past 7 o’clock, after an illness of one week, from a severe attack of vertigo. Mr. Cherry was attacked with vertigo Saturday one week previous to his death while attempting to mount his horse. He feel (it is spelled this way) to the ground, and when those who saw him ran to his assistance they found him extremely ill. He was carried into the house, and since then gradually grew worse, until he died last night, surrounded by his sorrowing family. Mr. Cherry was one of the best known citizens of Macon, having lived here for over fifty years. He had a large number of friends who will deeply regret to learn of his death. He was genial and social, and never failed to have a pleasant word for those whom he met. Mr. Cherry was 74 years of age. He came to Macon from Charlotte. N. C. where he was born, over fifty years ago, and engaged in the merchandise business with a Mr. Redding. This business was conducted for several years when the firm was dissolved and Mr. Cherry began farming on in extensive ---- in the swamp below the city. He met with great success as a farmer and accumulated considerable wealth. He was twice married, the first time to Miss Martha W. Wright, by whom he leaves six children all of whom are grown and married. They are: Mrs. Mary Tuggle of Stone Mountain, Mrs. Howell McAfee of Smithville, Mr. Judge S. Cherry, Mr. William H. Cherry, Mrs. Cicero E. Long and Mrs. Flora Reid of Macon. The second marriage was to Mrs. Battick and without issue. Up to the time of his last illness Mr. Cherry was as active and energetic as a man of 40. He led an active, outdoor life, which, no doubt, in a great measure accounts for his activity at so great an age. The hour for the funeral had not been fixed at a late hour last night. =================================================== Posted in the Macon Telegraph. I have copied it exactly as it appears.
